Casino Security Assessment | 2018-02-15

Technology gives and it takes away, especially in the world of casino protection.

On the one hand, advances in surveillance and security equipment and systems are definitely helping the gaming facility and all its various vulnerabilities become more secure and safe. At the same time, increased usage of Internet, mobile and other emerging technologies opens gaming properties to new forms of criminal attacks aimed at the money or wellbeing of casino patrons.

Fortunately, the casino protection community is up to the challenge of keeping the gaming enterprise steps ahead of those seeking to wreak criminal havoc. Within this marketplace, vendors continue to star, offering new or improved security-oriented products and systems that solve protection issues for operators. What follows is a rundown of some established and new gaming security and surveillance equipment providers that have made news recently and bear watching in 2018, as determined by the editors of Casino Journal.

ARB LABS

Table game security and play integrity is a constant concern for casino operators; and an issue that Las Vegas-based ARB LABS, a hardware and software company specializing in optical recognition solutions for the gaming industry, can help resolve.

The company’s automatic and scalable Bet Recognition and Hand Count System provides casino operators with one of the most technologically advanced table bet recognition systems. By using state-of-the-art proprietary hardware and software solutions, the system not only makes table games play more secure but generates slot-like analytics for popular casino table games like blackjack and baccarat, according to the company’s website.

ARB LABS made a big splash last year when it inked a deal with VizExplorer to meld its ChipVue live bet recognition solution into VizExplorer’s tableViz analytics offering. ChipVue uses proprietary optical technology to collect real-time wager information, while automatically tracking various bets made on popular table games. Captured data is recorded and can be used for player tracking and rating, side bet participation and measuring dealer performance. tableViz provides accurate player ratings to help casino managers evaluate player worth and game performance by dealer and table, along with data about player behavior and activity to inform marketing campaigns, player development initiatives and gaming floor changes.

It will be interesting to see how ARB LABS leverages its optical recognition solutions to create a more secure gaming space in 2018 and beyond.

Cognitec is also adding capabilities to its other products lines, such as integrating advances video investigation tools to its FaceVACS-VideoScan, allowing users to perform complex searches on persons appearing in real-time camera streams and stored media files.

Wynn’s Bullish Business Case | 2018-02-15

The combination of strong results in Macau and a positive outlook for the U.S. business environment made for an upbeat Steve Wynn at the company’s fourth quarter earnings call last month.

The call took place on the first day of a week that would end rather incongruously with a Wall Street Journal report alleging serious sexual misconduct by Wynn which he denied but would nonetheless drive the company’s stock down. The stock had been lifted by the numbers, especially in Macau, where Wynn Palace in Cotai is a big hit, particularly with the surging mass market. The Palace accounted for about 70 percent of the company’s overall revenue growth, with Wynn Macau accounting for the rest of the $388 million in growth. Wynn’s Las Vegas operation was down $6.2 million for the quarter, but the company was fully undeterred, announcing plans to fast-track development of a hotel that could add anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 rooms on a 38-acre parcel of land across the street from Wynn and Encore that it purchased just last December. Here’s some of what Wynn had to say about both markets:

GSA creates gaming blockchain committee | 2018-02-14

The Gaming Standards Association (GSA) and Gaming Standards Association Europe (GSA Europe) have created a new technical committee dedicated to blockchain use. GSA made the announcement from its stand at ICE Totally Gaming, where the organization celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Blockchain technology is poised to revolutionize data sharing, security and has the ability to provide regulatory authorities with previously unobtainable levels of transparency. GSA’s new Blockchain Technical Committee will collaboratively address the technology and advise on possible areas where standards could be developed.

“GSA was created to help drive innovation in the gaming industry for the benefit of manufacturers, suppliers, operators and regulators,” said GSA President Peter DeRaedt. “By creating a new blockchain committee, we are once again proving how, by creating a standard way to use technology, GSA is achieving our mission.”

“Many industries are evaluating how the blockchain technology can enhance data sharing security and increase operational transparency,” said GSA Europe Managing Director Mark Pace. “GSA will launch this new committee and evaluate the creation of a gaming industry standard. This is very timely and may have significant impact on how companies can achieve GDPR and AML requirements.”

Harrah’s Las Vegas recently announced it has completed a $140 million transformation, which includes 1,622 modern new guest rooms and suites in its Valley Tower. The new look comes as Harrah’s celebrates 80 years as a premier gaming brand.

This latest redesign follows the renovation of 672 guest rooms and suites on the south side of the tower in 2016, resulting in a completely refreshed Valley Tower at Caesars Entertainment resort. The easily accessible Harrah’s Las Vegas is steps away from various Las Vegas landmarks and attractions and is a stop on the Las Vegas Monorail line.

“Harrah’s is one of the most recognized gaming brands in the country and Harrah’s Las Vegas offers a great value in the heart of the Strip,” says Dan Walsh, general manager of Harrah’s Las Vegas. “The renovated Valley Tower combined with non-stop entertainment and distinct dining options further elevate the dynamic guest experience that can only be found at Harrah’s.”

Designed by Marnell Architecture, the interiors of the reimagined Valley Tower guest rooms consist of bold yet sophisticated décor with warm tones of gray and purple accents. Bold, purple fabric and blue sitting chairs complement the room’s cream décor, dark wood accents and contemporary fixtures. Oversized vanities offer backlit mirrors and bars, while suites feature ceramic dark plank tile.

Located on the ground floor of the Valley Tower, the resort now offers a new lobby bar with a sleek design that features 12 gaming stations, seating with charging stations and an Instagram-worthy image of the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. The resort’s recent renovations also include a completely remodeled casino floor and a new Starbucks near the Carnaval Court Bar.

Guest rooms and suites design highlights include the following:

  • Valley Tower Room: The new Valley Tower Room features one king or two queen beds with luxury bedding, a vanity with a backlit mirror and an electronic device docking station. Additional amenities include a bathroom vanity and rain shower.
  • Valley Executive Suite: The new Valley Executive Suite measures 680 square feet and offers a separate bedroom with one king bed, dining area and living room. The luxurious bathrooms feature ceramic dark plank tile, a vanity, makeup mirror, rain shower and large tub.
  • Valley Presidential Suite: Measuring 1,700 square feet, the stylish new Valley Presidential Suite includes an open living space and high-end bathroom features like a walk-in rain shower, creating a spa-like experience for guests. This suite comes with the option of adding a connecting room with one king bed.
  • Valley Penthouse: The new Valley Penthouse measures more than 2,000 square feet. The spacious living area features a double-sided ottoman and a full-sized bar. Pops of teal and purple combined with metallic accents give this superstar suite a bold, stylish kick. Other features include a game table and back-to-back bathroom sinks separated by a two-way mirror.

As part of Caesars Entertainment’s Code Green initiative, which aims to reduce landfill waste by 50 percent by 2020, much of the furniture from the renovated guest rooms and suites was donated to charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity in Las Vegas.

QTech, Asia’s fastest-growing games distributor, has unveiled a new recommendation engine which utilises similar technology to digital-content giants Amazon, Netflix and Spotify. QT Play is the first cross-provider recommendation mobile app tailor-made for the gaming industry, running off technology that allows QTech players to choose any game from any provider and switch between them at their convenience. Users will also be recommended games better aligned with their personal favorites in order to enhance the overall experience. These recommendations will be based on similarity of profile, content and playability and perfectly capture individual user taste.

“Spotify revolutionized the music industry in this domain, and we have similar hopes for QT Play. Its automated-curation solution ensures that players always find their favorite games, without ever missing out on an appropriate new release.”

“Greentube is constantly evolving to meet the needs of a demanding casino industry,” said Thomas Graf, CEO of Greentube. “These agreements with Seminole Gaming and Hard Rock have brought Greentube Pro to the next level in meeting the demands of a very competitive market.
